tender is the flesh by augustina bazterrica is a gruesome and graphic novel that focuses on human cannibalism. in this gory book, there is a widespread virus that infects animals and is deadly to humans. this makes it impossible for humans to eat meat, so, they resort to eating each other. humans are born and breaded into captivity, much like cattle, they are then traded and sold for meat.
we follow our protagonist, marco, who works in a slaughterhouse. he is gifted a woman, meant for consumption, however, he decides to keep her alive. marco has been estranged from his wife ever since their son died shortly after he was born. marco decides to have a baby with the woman he was gifted to fill the hole that was left after the death of his son. however, this does not go exactly as planned.
filled with plot twists and violent subject matter, tender is the flesh is the perfect read for anyone who wants to dive into a graphic dystopian novel. this is one of my personal favorite reads, just because of the writing style and overall plot. it is an amazing well-rounded novel, however, make sure you check the TWs before reading!
TWs: Murder, abuse, rape & brief animal brutality
